I. General Questions
I. 1. How does this project compare to other AI endavours?
The AI Now project is based on a so-called cognitive architecture. This is a design for a brain-analogue, which does not use the common neuron abstraction that you may be familiar with.
Other projects in this vein include SOAR (30 years old), OpenCog (6 years old), and Sigma (5 years old).
We are the new kid on the block, at barely 2 years of age.
Nevertheless, (or maybe not so surprisingly, if you understand how this works), we are the first project to announce an implementable and complete solution.
Cognitive architectures are difficult to evolve, as every new piece that is added can force you to make significant changes to the structure of the design.
I faced those difficulties many times during the 18 months of basic research that form the basis of the project.
Nevertheless, I was able to overcome all of the hurdles, and work out solutions to all sub-problems of AI, including those which have not yet any recognized (published or demonstrated) solutions in the literature.
This project takes the final step into a single unified agent architecture, by providing a complete integration of all sub-components necessary for strong AI.
Importantly, the AI Now project follows a very specific set of ethics, which you can read more about here: Ethics of the Project.

I. 2. Where can I find information about the project?
There are some in-progress-of-being-written documents in this Google Drive folder: AI Now
(You can always reach the docs by going to the homepage, and clicking on the "Docs" link in the header.)
There has also been some recent discussion, since I started working on publicising my research about a month ago.
Here is a short list, you might be interested in, if you have enough time. I will however try to summarize what was said there in this FAQ, as soon as possible.
- Reddit in /r/artificial
- Google Groups in comp.ai.philosophy
- Kurzweilai.net

I. 3. What is the history of this project?
Timeline:
2012
- early 2012 - late 2013 * fundamental research in Minsky-Solomonoff paradigm (completed)
2013
- late 2013 - ongoing * focus shifts from research, to commercialisation of the work, to finish the construction.
- Oct 2013 - ongoing * working out spec and approach for a new codebase (latest design: v7)
2014
- April * begin preparing public design documents from memory (and notes)
- May * lost access to all the old code and backups (old design: v2)
- June * starting fresh with a new codebase, based on the v7 design architecture
- June 10th * Signed up our first contributor
- June 12th * Signed up our third possible contributor, and talking to a first possible investor!
- June 26th * Sent out emails to all possible contributors that development should restart
- June 29th * Noone showed up! It seems like the offers to participate that I received were insincere?
- July 2nd * Looking for possible contributors..
- July 7th? * Set up a (basic) Patreon page for crowdfunding (http://patreon.com/AI)
- July 13th * Considering starting an altcoin (AIC) based on the AI Now project

I. 4. Will you publish a thesis on the AI Now design?
Unfortunately, the details of the design need to be hidden, to prevent theft. I will however try to specify as much as possible of the simpler aspects of the architecture, which will take up the first six months or so of development.
I of course encourage anyone to do their own work, and to try to work better and faster than us. So we get to the Singularity as soon as possible. But I have too many concerns about the potential abuse of the first AI, to release any significant part of my work to the public.
I believe that much that the design will work.
Development will eventually switch to a silo, with the developers all living under one roof. I will try to write up my plans for this stage, and the security requirements, at a later point.
